Army Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Adrian Allen Eichhorn has devoted his life to aviation safety, education, and public service. A decorated U.S. Army officer, master flight instructor, award-winning aviation educator, aircraft mechanic, and internationally recognized safety advocate, he has spent more than four decades helping pilots fly safer.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, while his father was serving in the U.S. Army, Adrian developed his passion for aviation at an early age. His father, a decorated Army aviator and Korean War veteran, inspired a lifelong fascination with flight that would shape his career.

After graduating from Michigan Technological University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Adrian was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Although his repeated requests to attend Army flight school were never approved, he never abandoned his dream of flying.

During his distinguished 20-year military career, Adrian served in numerous leadership assignments before concluding his service on the Joint Chiefs of Staff as Strategic Nuclear Advisor to President William Jefferson Clinton. He retired from active duty in 2000 having earned numerous military decorations, including the Legion of Merit.

Following his military career, Adrian built one of the aviation industry’s most respected careers as both pilot and educator. During more than 26,000 hours of flight time, he has flown missions as a Pilot In Command for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), NASA, JetBlue, General Dynamics, Leidos, Lockheed Martin, and the Washington Redskins. While serving as an FAA pilot, he was selected to transport senior government officials, including the Secretary of Transportation, the FAA Administrator, the NASA Administrator, and legendary American astronauts Neil Armstrong and John Glenn.

In 1989, Adrian founded Alpine Aviation, Inc., specializing in Beechcraft flight training. An FAA Gold Seal Flight Instructor and Master Certified Flight Instructor, he has trained pilots from primary instruction through advanced business jet operations. As an FAA instructor, he provided both flight and ground instruction in Gulfstream III, Gulfstream IV, and Cessna Citation Excel aircraft to FAA flight crews and senior agency leadership.

For more than 35 years, Adrian has become one of aviation’s leading voices in safety education. He has delivered hundreds of seminars, webinars, podcasts, videos, articles, and presentations that have reached thousands of pilots throughout the world. His presentations have been featured by organizations including the FAA, NTSB, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Women in Aviation International, The Ninety-Nines, Civil Air Patrol, Boy Scouts of America, JetBlue, and the American Bonanza Society. More than 500 of these presentations have been delivered on a pro bono basis.

Recognizing a critical gap between pilot training and aircraft maintenance knowledge, Adrian also dedicated his career to helping pilots and mechanics better understand aircraft airworthiness and engine health. As a licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic with Inspection Authorization (A&P/IA), he pioneered the use of digital borescope technology to inspect piston aircraft engines, transforming the way mechanics and aircraft owners identify internal engine damage before catastrophic failures occur.

Rather than commercializing this groundbreaking inspection technique, Adrian freely shared his knowledge with thousands of pilots and mechanics. Working with AOPA and the NTSB, he developed educational materials that enabled technicians to accurately identify exhaust valve failures before they resulted in engine loss. His work has significantly improved maintenance practices throughout general aviation and has potentially saved hundreds of lives.

Adrian has also demonstrated the practical application of aviation safety through extraordinary flights. After completely restoring a vintage 1962 Beechcraft Bonanza, he successfully completed a solo around-the-world flight that inspired pilots and aviation enthusiasts worldwide. He later completed an even more ambitious mission—a nonstop, 21-hour solo flight from Reykjavik, Iceland, across the North Pole to Fairbanks, Alaska. Followed by more than three million people, both flights were designed to promote aviation safety, maintenance excellence, and pilot education while inspiring the next generation of aviators.

Adrian’s lifelong commitment to aviation has earned national recognition. He is an inductee in the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame as well as the Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame. He has received numerous military and civilian honors, including the FAA National Aviation Maintenance Technician of the Year, FAA National Aviation Safety Counselor of the Year, the AOPA General Aviation Safety Award, the American Bonanza Society Airmanship Award, and the United States Armed Forces Legion of Merit.
